How e-mail works

1. In order to use an email server you must be connected to an email server and the internet. Software based email clients such as 'Microsoft Outlook' only require access to the internet when downloading the emails whereas clients such as 'MSN Hotmail' require access to the internet throughout the time reading them. Emails can also be accessed via mobile phone now by connecting with GPRS, WAP or SMS.

2. The message will be composed in an editing window or frame within the email client. This will be either text based or HTML based.

3. Then it will be sent via a SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol-port 25) server. It will be recieved by either a POP3 (Post Office Protocol-port 110) or an IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol-port 143). (See diagram)
